Amherst, NS , June 12, 2026- Early last week, United Way Maritimes was proud to welcome community members and partners to an open house at The Groves at Hillsdale in Amherst. This housing development is designed to fill growing gaps in the missing middle-of-housing options, where homeownership opportunities for working families with modest, stable incomes are in extremely short supply.
The event offered an opportunity to showcase the progress of the project, which currently has 38 out of 47 residential units built and upwards of 20 people calling The Groves at Hillsdale home. Guests toured completed units, explored the design and layout of the development, and connected directly with project partners to learn how this initiative is supporting individuals and families. Units are available for sale through a modified shared-equity homeownership model, with the remainder available at affordable monthly rents.
Across the Maritimes, the housing crisis continues to be driven by a combination of limited supply, rising costs, and systemic barriers to entry. The Groves at Hillsdale is a response to these challenges, working to expand housing options and create attainable pathways into the housing market.
This project reflects the power of collaboration. United Way Maritimes is working alongside Mosaic Credit Union, the Town of Amherst, the Shaw group, and other community partners to deliver housing that meets local needs while contributing to broader systems change.

At United Way Maritimes, we know that housing is foundational to overall well-being. When people have access to safe, stable homes, they are better positioned to pursue education, employment, and meaningful participation in their communities.
Initiatives like The Groves at Hillsdale are part of a larger commitment to address the root causes of housing insecurity, not just the symptoms. By investing in solutions that expand access and remove barriers, we are helping to build a future where more people have the opportunity to thrive and where homelessness becomes rare, brief, and non-recurring.
As interest in The Groves at Hillsdale continues to grow, so does the momentum toward meaningful change. The open house was not only a chance to highlight progress, but also to spark important conversations about the future of housing in our region.
United Way Maritimes remains committed to working with partners, communities, and all levels of government to expand housing, create opportunity, and advance lasting solutions.
