United Way Colchester County

Improving lives and building community in Colchester County

March 19, 2024

Urgent Food & Essentials Fund

The Urgent Food & Essentials Fund, made possible with support from the Province of Nova Scotia, is supporting local nonprofits that are already running food and essentials programs. The fund is administered by United Ways across the province.

The organizations receiving funding are in many cases enhancing existing supports, offering nutritious meals; fresh fruit and vegetables; milk, eggs and cheese; and culturally appropriate foods. Some organizations are offering grocery store gift cards, which give people choice in the food they eat and the ability to purchase essentials such as hygiene products, diapers and menstrual products. All programs are increasing access to food and essentials for people who are marginalized and living in poverty.

Food insecurity has always been a challenge for vulnerable, marginalized, low income people who have limited sources of income. For those who struggle to get around, or who are unable to cook, or do not have enough funds to purchase healthy food choices, this funding will allow them a guaranteed healthy meal option and snacks on a daily basis without having to worry about where to find food options.”

– Shelter Nova Scotia

We’re very pleased share the list of organizations that received funding through the Urgent Food and Essentials Fund, provided by the Nova Scotia Government. It’s great to see so many organizations able to expand the support that they’re providing in their communities.
